MY MUSICAL JOURNEY
----------------------------------
I was born in Melbourne and began learning the piano with the Suzuki Method at the age of four.
Soon after starting primary school, I fell in love with the beautiful sounds of the flute after hearing an older student perform. I began learning the flute at age 9 whilst living in Wellington, New Zealand.
On returning to Melbourne I studied flute with Alison Catanach at Methodist Ladies College. Whilst at school I gained a wide range of performance opportunities and experience as a soloist and in ensembles including orchestras, symphonic bands, flute ensembles and flute duets. At the age of just seventeen, I gained my Associate of Music Australia (AMusA) and performed a solo of ‘Greensleeves’ in Hamer Hall, at the Arts Centre Melbourne.
PERFORMING
--------------------
In 2004, I was a major prize winner at The B'nai B'rith Jewish Youth Eisteddfod in Melbourne, and I was asked to perform as a soloist by the composer George Dreyfus at the Gandel Festival of Jewish Music. I completed a Bachelor of Music at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium in in the same year under the guidance of renowned flautists Mardi McSullea and Margaret Crawford.
In 2011, I was awarded the Leonard & Margaret Doman Graduate Scholarship for Flute to study for the Master of Music degree at the Australian National University under prominent Australian flautists Virginia Taylor and Vernon Hill.
Throughout 2011 I performed extensively in Canberra as a soloist and in chamber music groups. These included regular Lunchbox concerts at the School of Music, performances at University House and lunchtime concerts at Floriade and the Wesley Music Centre.
During my student years , I performed in Masterclasses and private lessons for international flautists in Australia, UK, New Zealand and Canada. My teachers included internationally renowned flautists Alexia Still (USA), Wissam Boustany (UK), Yossi Arnheim (Israel), Alison Mitchell (UK), Robert Dick (USA), Gwen Klassen (Canada) and Elizabeth Koch (SA).
TEACHING
---------------
I was a flute tutor at the French Woods Festival of the Arts in New York, USA during the 2001 summer camp season. Here I tutored and performed with children from aged seven to seventeen in a wide range of music styles and genres, including Broadway musicals. During the first school term of 2013, I taught Suzuki Flute in the Inner West of Sydney, from the absolute beginner to advanced student.
I launched my home Flute Studio in January 2015. I currently teach students of all ages - beginners to advanced and I am excited to be guiding them on their flute playing journey. I have a current Working With Children Check (NSW) and Public Liability Insurance.
When I am not teaching, I am busy completing my Certificate IV in Flute Pedagogy under the guidance of experienced Suzuki Flute Teacher and Teacher Trainer, Alina Gollner.
FLUTE LESSONS
------------------------
Flute Lessons:
I teach weekly individual flute lessons. Each lesson is tailored to the individual needs of the student in an encouraging environment. I believe that every child has the ability to learn and I strive to teach excellence each step of the way. I have trained with the best flute teachers in Australia, earning my Master of Music Performance in Flute. I teach students from absolute beginners to advanced using the Suzuki Method.
Group Flute Classes:
Group classes are an integral part of the Suzuki Method. In these classes students will learn to play in small flute ensembles, perform new and current pieces whilst gaining valuable performance experience. Group classes allow students to interact with their peers in a fun environment. These classes will be scheduled once or twice per term.
Parent Involvement:
The Suzuki Method depends on the involvement of three people to succeed: the teacher, the parent and the child. This is what we refer to as the Suzuki Triangle.
Your role will include:
- Attending every lesson with your child
- Taking notes during the lessons
- Practicing at home everyday with your child
- Playing the relevant CD recordings at home daily
- Understanding the flute and how to take care of it
- Attending annual workshops, concerts, and summer school with your child
